i just watched a hindi movie from the 1970s called pakeezah. touching story about a courtesan, roles in society, prostitution (or something like it), and of course, forbidden love.
i was mostly taken back by the setting: the scenery, the times, the customs, the classical take on performing music and dance, etc. more so than the characters and their complicated little story.
arched doorways, dome structures, and intricate rugs poetically enhanced the backdrop. at one point characters are seen riding through the countryside, and the main hero falls for the girl by the mehndi on her feet and leaves her a note while she sleeps.
there's not really a point to this. but as much as i use technology and very much delve into contemporary society, i kind of miss the past even though i have never experienced it.
it seems as if everything was so much simpler...human interactions were based on just that, human interactions. no established systems of communication, no social media networking, none of the easily accessible overwhelmingness (is that even a word?) that is today. and seeing it from that point of view rather than the western one i'm used to just tugged at something i didn't really know i had in me.
maybe i was born in the wrong era. maybe i just need to get in touch with my roots. or maybe i just experienced the effect the filmmaker wanted to achieve: going head-over-heels for an overly romanticized period piece.
well, it inspired me to blog. i'll try to keep the habit. like i said, there's not really a point to this.
that is all.
